  • Wingfold: Celebrating George MacDonald. This quarterly journal, edited by Barbara Amell, offers much information about the publication circumstances of MacDonald’s publications. The Wade Center maintains a table of contents.
  • Rolland Hein, George MacDonald: Victorian Mythmaker (Nashville, Tennessee: Star Song Publishing, 1993). Hein interweaves summaries of MacDonald’s books with biographical narrative.
  • North Wind: A Journal of George MacDonald Studies, published by the George MacDonald Society.
  • Michael Phillips, George MacDonald: A Writer’s Life (Sunrise Books, 2021), 3rd ed. This is vol. 38 of “The Cullen Collection,” and consists of the introductions for the other volumes in the series. That is, each chapter of this volume introduces one of MacDonald works “redacted… revised and updated” by Phillips. With his redacted editions, Phillips hopes (as do others who revise or abridge MacDonald’s works) to increase readership of MacDonald on a popular level. Scholars, of course, will wish to cite MacDonald’s original language. Regardless of what one thinks of Phillips’ redacted editions, in the introductions collected here, Phillips documents interesting circumstances of publication of MacDonald’s works based upon his own research. Note: If you wish to read MacDonald’s original editions, be aware that volumes in The Cullen Collection are generally published under the same titles as the originals; e.g., the cover of Phillips’ redacted edition of Malcolm is labeled as “George Macdonald, Malcolm.” Many who read titles from The Cullen Collection or listen to them on audio may erroneously assume that the words they are reading or hearing are MacDonald’s own.
