The last chapter, “Barbara’s dream,” was a real dream related to MacDonald, and only slightly altered by him. This was the last of his novels published in three volumes.

The Athenaeum reviewing it (April 25,1891, pp. 532-538) said MacDonald’s purpose was “Miltonic now as ever”.
