Dedicated from Porto Fino, Dec., 1878, to W. C(owper) T(emple): “Tuum est.”
This novel, which was finished at Porto Fino and is a sequel to “Thomas Wingfold, Curate,” Faber being an Agnostic. Strahan, who had separated from his partners, declined the story for his newly launched Day of Rest, but bought the rights for a first three volume edition and offered the author a bill for £400 at three months, which was accepted though less than half the price MacDonald had been recently getting for his novels. The bill was endorsed by Mr. Cowper Temple (afterwards Lord Mount-Temple, to whom the story was dedicated) and discounted (Greville MacDonald’s “ George MacDonald,” p. 477). Dr. Greville tells (p. 353) that his father thought “ Paul Faber ” the “ best of all his novels ”.
The novel was reviewed in the British Quarterly Review (Jan. 1879, Ixix., 236-238) and in the Athenaeum (Dec. 21, 1878, p. 801).
Mr. Ronald MacDonald points out that chapter 28, though not containing portraits, describes incidents typical of the cold-shouldering of his father at Arundel.
