The story was largely written at 26 Grant Street, Cullen, and describes that place as “Portlossie” and MacDonald’s great grandfather’s escape from Culloden. The remarkable piper, Duncan
MacPhail, in it is said to have been a certain Farquhar Gillanders.
The story was serialised in the Glasgow Weekly Herald, which according to R. D. S. in the Glasgow Herald, Sept. 4, 1924, refused the “Marquis of Lossie” on the ground that the paper had contracted for a complete story. There was a perfect rush on the paper purchasers, I am told by Mr. Hugh L. Cheyne, who lives in the house where “Malcolm” was written, asking not for the Herald but simply for “Makim.”
