This was abridged from two articles, which look like a sermon, of the same title, and headed by the text Romans viii. 19, which appeared in the Sunday Magazine (1892), xxi., 659-664,770-778.
I am indebted for this reference to this very rare pamphlet, which is not in the British Museum, to Dr. George P. Black, New York Public Library, though the booklet is not in his library. MacDonald who was a great lover of animals also sets forth his views on vivisection in “Paul Faber.” One of the points in the heresy hunt against him at Arundel in 1852, was based on the gossip that he had expressed a hope that the lower animate would be sharers in the better life to come (Greville MacDonald’s “George MacDonald,” p. 177).
