  • 1854. Signed ” XXX,” this fairy story first appeared in the Monthly Christian Spectator (Oct., 1854), iv., 633-640.
  • 1864. It was reprinted in the first (1864) edition of ” Adela Cathcart” (ii., 208-260), but was omitted from the 1882 edition.
  • 1871. Reprinted in (x., 169-225) “Works of fancy and imagination,” which were reprinted 1876, 1884.
  • (1909). Reprinted in (pp. 211-235) “ The Portent and other stories,” by Fisher Unwin; given to guests at the London centenary conversazione, with new title page and cover.
