Dedicated, from Bordighera, Feb., 1891: “In the sure hope of ever lasting brotherhood, I offer this book to Ronald MacDonald, my son and friend, my pupil, fellow-student, and fellow-workman.”

The last chapter, “Barbara’s dream,” was a real dream related to MacDonald, and only slightly altered by him. This was the last of his novels published in three volumes.

The Athenaeum reviewing it (April 25,1891, pp. 532-538) said MacDonald’s purpose was “Miltonic now as ever”.
