The Saturday Review in a long review (Nov. 25, 1882, liv., 704-705) thought it “one of the worst” of MacDonald’s books. The Spectator, March 24, 1883 thought it “probably the poorest and least pleasant” of his stories. The Athenaeum (Nov. 4, 1882, p. 595) described it as ” ill-balanced.”
