Dedicated from Bordighera, March, 1882, in three four-line stanzas, to Mrs. Russell Gurney, who had been introduced to MacDonald by Lady Byron and who met him in 1872 in America, where her husband (1804-78) had gone as commissioner for the Washington treaty, 1871. The original contract for the story, for which £400 was to be paid shows that the original title was “Warlock of Glen Warlock.”

Serialised in the Glasgow Weekly Maily Jan. 9-May 1, 1897 (Mitchell Library, Glasgow).

The story was reviewed in the Spectator (June 24, 1882, Iv., 837-838), and in the Athenaeum (May 21, 1882, p. 664).

  • 1881. Published as “ Warlock o‘ Glen Warlock ” in Harper’s Franklin Square Library, New York. And also by Lothrop, Boston. Mr. Joseph Johnson says (“ George MacDonald,” p. 238) some Americans from the Far West wrote to MacDonald that their name was Warlock, and that they thought they must have come from the same stock as that described in the story.
