- 1879. This story, which was written at Porto Fino, was serialised in the Glasgow Weekly Mail (vol. iii.), Jan. 4-March 15, 1879, (file in Mitchell Library, Glasgow). Sir Edward Troup thinks it was also serialised in New Zealand. Dr. Greville MacDonald says (“ Life,” p. 488) it was serialised in Lippincotts Magazinet but this is not so.

(It) is, I think, at once the most direct and most beautiful of all George MacDonald’s novels,” and he regards it (“ Life,” p. 488) as the “ most picturesque of his Scottish stories.”
