Dedicated: “To James Powell, Esq., his grateful son-in-law dedicates this book.” MacDonald married Powell’s daughter, Louisa, in 1851. His cousin, Helen MacKay, had married Powell’s son, Alexander, in 1844. James Powell died in 1870.

The story was the result of a summer holiday of the MacDonald family in 1867 to Bude, the church of Kilkhampton being transposed thence and the place named “ Kilkhaven.” Dr. Greville MacDonald admits that it is not one of his father’s “strong novels, neither story nor characters being very convincing,” though he holds that the description of the storm itself is “ worthy of Clark Russell or Dickens in its detail and grandeur.”
